By its bylaws, 95% of all charitable contributions are applied to program activities, not to operational overhead. When children are born, they have potential that is limited only by their opportunities in life and natural talents. There is hope of that they will have a happy childhood, loving parents, nourishing meals, a roof above them, and sufficient education to allow them to go as far and high as they can dream. For the “street child” of India, however, the reality is quite different. In Kolkata alone there are approximately 100,000 homeless children. Their very survival requires daily foraging for food, water, and clothing, finding shelter, and fending off crime – including child slavery, forced labor, involuntary prostitution, torture, and death. Children who are orphaned or disabled, if not left to life on the streets, often endure custodial institutions better designed to meet their basic survival needs than to prepare them for a meaningful and productive adulthood. Two years ago, Empower the Children was created by Rosalie Giffoniello and Janet Grosshandler Smith to help the neediest children of Kolkata. Our mission is to serve these children, enriching their lives physically, intellectually, and spiritually; we want to point them toward their potential and help them to learn the skills they need to reach it. Programs ======== [Park Street Pavement School]: providing elementary school education to homeless children. [Adarshya Mitali Coaching Center for Girls]: tutoring in core curriculum and teaching life skills and cultural programs to slum-dwelling girls. [Bulbulir Basa Orphanage]: building a new orphanage, school, and medical dispensary. [Prabartak Orphanage]: Classroom redesign and renovation to create a suitable learning environment, and providing special education to mentally handicapped young adults without families. [Lunch Program at Benoy Badal Dinesh School for Destitute Children]: helping to nourish Kolkata’s poorest children. [Disha]: developing curriculum and training teachers to teach economically disadvantaged pre-school children. |
